Driving in Rhodes: what to expect

  • Main roads are generally straightforward; village, mountain and rural roads can be narrow and winding.
  • Driving times are longer than the distances suggest, so a comfortable car matters on southern trips.
  • Speed limits vary by road and location — commonly 30 km/h and 50 km/h in built-up areas and up to 80 km/h on some main roads. Always follow the posted limit.
  • Watch for animals on rural roads, especially around sunset and after dark.

Luggage is the usual mistake

Suitcase figures assume the rear seats are free of bags. Four adults with four hold suitcases do not fit into a compact car, and a 7-seater with every seat in use has roughly the boot of a small hatchback. If you are close to the limit, size up one category.
